Study: Domestic Violence Costs Tennessee Nearly $1 Billion Annually

(WREG-TV) Cases of domestic violence may be dropping in Tennessee, but the cost of these crimes is is starting to add up.

A new study by the Tennessee Economic Council on Women says that last year, Tennessee spent at least $886,171,950.

The estimate includes the cost of investigating and charging the suspects, along with medical and mental health treatment for the victims.

The council says the cost is probably an underestimate, with the real cost exceeding a billion dollars per year.

The study is the first of its kind in the state to calculate the economic impact of domestic violence, sex crimes, and sex trafficking.
