(Memphis) There was a first-alarm fire at a three-story apartment building in the medical district Friday.

"It was smoke all in the sky."

"This girl kept hollering, 'Somebody in there!'"

"Like a boom-and-dash kinda thing."

The building, which has 30 units, is located at Madison and Montgomery, near the Southern College of Optometry.

It happened fast. People say they heard a huge boom, and saw a man with a suitcase running from the building.

A group chased and tackled him, holding him until police arrived.

"Made it easy for police. They just picked him up off the ground over there."

A News Channel 3 team saw police search the man's suitcase, while firefighters tried to get a handle on the flames.

"They continued to run in the building, it was complete mayhem."

"Scariest part was that fire truck couldn't stop and about ran over me."

Adding to the chaos, a Memphis fire truck went across the parking lot before being stopped by a concrete barrier and chain link fence.

"It appears the brakes went out on the truck," MFD's Wayne Cook said.

Thick smoke and flames coming out of the building could be seen for a distance.

MFD searched the building, and it appears everyone made it out OK.

    Typical Memphis.

Well, so much for City Vehicle Maintinance. You can believe motorists will give the FD the Right of way for a while.
