(Memphis) Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong now says as many as 12,000 untested rape kits are in the custody of MPD.
Previously we were told there were half that many kits that needed testing.
More than 2200 have been tested.
In 2010, News Channel 3 uncovered the police department had not been testing the kits.
Recently, the Memphis City Council accepted a $500,000 grant from the State of Tennessee to test the kit.
The current plan is to send 400 kits a month to labs to see if there are any DNA traces on them.
Some council members have suggested taking money from city reserves to pay for more testing.
