(Memphis) Memphis’ rich musical history is the reason the global spotlight will be shining on the city next year with a new awards show.

The Soul Of Memphis Legacy Awards Show will air March 1, 2014, on BET’s CentricTV.

Actors Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Elise Neal will host the awards show, which organizers say will be an elegant, two-hour ceremony recorded at the Cannon Center on February 7 of next year.

It will honor musicians whose body of work enriches the musical landscape and it will honor Memphis.

City and state leaders, along with executives with Black Entertainment Television or BET and Global Liberty Entertainment, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

BET executive Paxton Baker said the awards show had to be in Memphis.

“So, why the Soul of Memphis? Memphis was a bedrock or is a bedrock of music and talent that crossed literally from American culture and American history and from our end we hope a snapshot of that,” Baker said.

Mayor Wharton said this show will continue to tell the world about Memphis music.

“Here’s BET, world renowned, coming in and saying, ‘Hey, we know a good thing when we see it and we want to tell the world about it,'” he said.
