Diabetes is one of the costliest diseases both economically and socially. 1 in 3 Americans (79 million people) has prediabetes, but only 11 percent of those with prediabetes know they have it. People with prediabetes are likely to develop diabetes if they don`t take action to improve their health.
Below is info on our YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program that will launch in November, which coincides with Diabetes Awareness Month. Prior to the launch of the program, we will have free community health screenings for adults (18 and over) to learn if they are at-risk for developing type 2 diabetes. These screenings are open to the community and will take place at several YMCAs on Thursday, October 24 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. People do not have to be a member of the Y to participate. Screening includes: blood pressure, blood sugar, height, weight, waist circumference and BMI. Those who are at risk, may qualify for the YMCA`s Diabetes Prevention Program. More information will be provided at the screening.
