(Memphis) Mayor A C Wharton held an event urging the unisured to sign up for the Health Insurance Marketplace.

The Affordable Care Act takes effect Tuesday, whether the government shuts down or not.

The city held a “Get Covered Memphis” kick-off event at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library Monday. Wharton said 140,000 people in Shelby County are uninsured and the city is working to make sure signing up for an insurance plan goes smoothly.

There are 600 computers available throughout Memphis, where the uninsured can apply, or consumers can visit the local Seedco office for help answering questions.
