Tennessee Health Department Confirms Investigation Of Possibly Tainted Shots

(Ripley) Another Tennessee clinic is now linked to possibly tainted injections.

The On Your Side Investigators got a tip from a patient who says she’s now being treated with antibiotics after getting a possibly tainted cortisone shot at a Ripley doctor’s office, Care Rite.

Officials with the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed an ongoing investigation.

Dr. Marion Kainer, Director of the Healthcare Acquired Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance Program, says the investigation started about two weeks ago after Care Rite self reported.

According to Dr. Kainer, they’ve only identified four patients that were possibly affected.

Health officials have not determined the source of the outbreak, but are looking at several products such as injections, including cortisone, as well as antiseptics.

Dr. Kainer says so far, tests show contamination is not related to a fungus.

Also, Dr. Kainer told WREG the problem doesn’t seem to be widespread.

She says at this point, they believe it’s isolated to one clinic, on one day.

“I don’t think it’s something the general public needs to be concerned about.”

Dr. Kainer added, with this incident, they’re, “not looking at something like NECC,” referring to the deadly meningitis outbreak where tainted steroid shots came from a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts.

Care Rite has been contacting patients.

Dr. Kainer said the clinic has been “exceptionally cooperative” and has “bent over backwards” to assist in the investigation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Food and Drug Administration have been notified.

The On Your Side Investigators called the main office of Care Rite in Dyersburg, but a woman who identified herself as a manager said, “I’m not authorized to speak about that.”

She said we’d have to speak to the doctor who was out of town.

Dr. Kainer says testing continues, but results could take weeks, if not months, to come back.
