(Memphis) The University of Memphis has inquired about buying Audubon Park from the city.

A city official has confirmed the university is interested in buying the park and golf course.

While the intentions are not clear, there is, of course, speculation there could be a plan to put a stadium on that land.

Late Thursday the University said it does not plan to put a stadium on that land.

The sale of the park would have a lot of hurdles to go through since it is public land.

The University issued this statement:

“We’ve had some initial conversations with the city, but we do not have any information or details to share at this time. If the university and the city determine that this is workable, we will certainly include the community in future discussions about the usage of Audubon Park. Brad Martin proposed the idea to the Mayor, but no determination has been made as to how the park might be utilized in the future. I can tell you that neither the university or the city would be interested in proceeding unless the community was involved in those conversations. Our discussions with the city are in their infancy at this point.”
