A violent sexual offender has been living across the street from a Frayser elementary and high schools.

Police said they had no idea Kelvin Calhoun was living there until neighbors complained he was yelling at a group of teenagers.

Calhoun is behind bars on felony charges for lying to police about where he was living.

Those living in Peach Tree North Apartments had no idea Calhoun was a registered violent sex offender.

Calhoun was convicted of beating up a child when he was 21 years old.

Tennessee law says sex offenders are not allowed to live within 1,000 feet of a school.

Although Calhoun's ID states he lives in southeast Memphis, he's actually been living in an apartment on Steele Street.

The apartment is across the road from Frayser High and Frayser Elementary.

According to the police report, Calhoun has lived there for five years, but his wife claims they just moved in.

"They're trying to make it look like something bad happened, but it's not," she said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the sex offender database.

They said it's the offender's job to let them know if they've moved and should do so within 48 hours.

Calhoun's address listed on the TBI's website is different from the one listed on his ID and where he lived.

The TBI said Calhoun checked in three months ago and never mentioned a move.

His wife said she didn't know her husband could not live by a school, but now that she does know, "we're going to move. I mean there's nothing I can do but move."

Calhoun is being held on a $25,000 bond. He is set to appear in court later this month.
