Corinth Animal Shelter Director Wants Animal Abusers Prosecuted

(Corinth, MS) Animal abuse in Alcorn County, Miss., has animal shelter workers in Corinth vowing to go after the abusers.

They say strong laws are in place and they want police and prosecutors involved to protect animals.

The latest victim of animal abuse is a 2-year-old female pit bull brought to the Cornith-Alcorn Animal Shelter.

She has a ten-inch long gash in her neck that’s two inches deep.

The wound was caused by a tight rope, not a collar.

Shelter Director Charlotte Doehner said that wasn’t the dog’s only problem.

“Covered in fleas and feces and ticks. She has bite marks on her face and throughout her body.”

Along with the female pit bull, five malnourished, flea-infested puppies were also recovered from a house on Gaines Street in Corinth.

Corinth Street Commissioner Philip Verdung said animal control officers responded to a complaint at the house and found a variety of other animals.

“Pigeons and chickens. And none of them were being cared for.”

These most recent cases of animal abuse have Charlotte Doehner fighting mad and ready to take legal action.

“We do intend to file charges against people who are abusing animals either directly or through sheer neglect.”

Luke Doehner, who knows something about the law, filed a complaint Thursday with Corinth Police against the owner of the abused and neglected dogs.

“The 2-year-old momma was tied up so hard that it just looked like she was just used strictly for breeding, nothing else.”

He says a 2011 Mississippi law can take a bite out of this kind of abuse and bring heavy fines and jail time to convicted abusers.

But new laws aren’t stemming the tide of abused and discarded animals at the Corinth Shelter.

Animals that require love and money to care for them.

In fact, on Thursday, two members of the Corinth Elks Lodge showed their organizations support for the shelter by making a $1,600 donation.

Charlotte Doehner said the community can also help by reporting animal abuse whenever they see it.
