President Obama Visits The Volunteer State With Better Bargain Plan

(Chattanooga) He wasn’t quite doing the Tennessee Waltz, but President Barack Obama’s road trip to the Volunteer state didn’t dance around issues he says are important to Tennessee and America.

“It’s good to be back in Tennessee and great to be at Amazon,” the president said.

During his trip to Chattanooga, the president toured an Amazon shipping facility and spoke to workers about his Better Bargain plan.

“What we need to do as a country is secure a Better Bargain for the middle class.”

The trip comes after Amazon announced it is adding hundreds of jobs at the Chattanooga facility and converting some part-time jobs to full-time positions.

The president says a national plan is needed.

“A national strategy to make sure every person who’s willing to work has a chance to succeed in the 21st century.”

The speech consisted of proposals to cut corporate tax rates–something Republicans want– in exchange to jump-start private sector job growth.

“I’m going to try offering something that serious people in both parties should be able to support, a deal that simplifies the tax code for our business and creates good jobs and wages for middle class folks.”

But the president acknowledged it might be a tough sell for Tennesseans and their GOP lawmakers.

“I know the politics for Obama aren’t always great in Tennessee. I understand that. I want everybody here to have the truth.”

Before leaving Tennessee, the president also challenged Republicans to come up with their own plan, if they don’t like his.

“Now it’s time for Republicans to layout their ideas. If they’ve got a better plan to bring back more manufacturing jobs to Tennessee then let me know. I want to hear them.”

Regarding state GOP leaders, none of them were expected to be in attendance in Chattanooga for the President’s visit.

But many later panned the president’s plan and accused him of repacking proposals he already supports and making no concessions to the opposing party.
