Chavis Carter’s Mother Reveals New Information In Lawsuit

(Jonesboro, AR) Teresa Carter fought back tears as she spoke about her son, Chavis, who was found shot in the head while handcuffed in the back of a police squad car.

“I have accepted the fact he’s gone, but I want to know what happened,” said Carter

After a year of gathering the facts, she sat down with us and revealed details of her lawsuit against police.

The suit states Chavis was still breathing when he was found.

One officer took pictures on his cellphone and grabbed the gun off the seat, according to the suit.

Witnesses testified neither officer was near the car when the gun went off and Carter was alone in the vehicle.

Carter’s girlfriend said he called her twice while he was in the police car.

Police also released a statement from Carter’s friend Robert Canada who said Carter told him if he was ever arrested again, he would kill an officer or himself.

Carter’s body tested positive for drugs including anti-anxiety medicine.

The suit states there’s a tape recorder that one of the officers had running, but then was lost somehow.

“That’s too many mistakes, how you lose the memory card?” asked Carter. “I didn’t buy the story from the beginning.”

There were two other men in the car who were let go that night.

Officers kept Chavis because he lied and gave them a false name and had an active warrant out of Mississippi.

According to the suit, officers wouldn’t tell him why he was kept.

When Chavis arrived dead at the hospital, the lawsuit states police ordered all hospital staff out of the room.

It’s all just too much for this mother, who says she’s suing for just one reason.

“I don’t give two rats… about the money”, said Carter. “I want to know what happened to my son.”

Jonesboro Police didn’t respond to our requests for comment on the story.

The lawsuit doesn’t list a dollar amount, but does sue for negligence, civil rights violations, constitutional violations, failure to train officers, negligent hiring and wrongful death.
