(Corinth, MS) Sam Childers drives all the way from Tennessee into Mississippi for a bite of a real Southern taste.
He’s a huge fan of slugburgers.
”We used to have a place in Michie that used to make ‘em and they went out of business and this is the best place in Corinth to get ‘em,” Childers said.
Shrouded in mystery, this luncheon treat has had people asking the same question for years: ”Is it really made of slugs? Well, we have a pit out back and we grow our own slugs,” Cindy Marsh of Corinth’s Slugburger Cafe said.
She’s kidding about the slugs, by the way.
The legend of the slugburger began during the Depression when meat was scarce. Cooks started using filler to make the meat go further, and a Southern tradition was born.
The filler is breadcrumb, and/or crackers. The slugburgers originally sold for a nickel, or a “slug,”
”Do they end up buying one?” I asked.
“Oh yeah, if they don’t buy one, we give ‘em one,” said Marsh.
This weekend, downtown Corinth celebrates the slugburger in a festival that raises money for the local Main Street Association.
”The Main Street Association, we work on maintaining things downtown and help the whole community and so it all comes back into Corinth” said Main Street Director Taylor Coombs.
This year, the slugburger eating contest features the nation’s top two eaters, Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie. They’ll try to break the record of eating 30 slugburgers.
”If he can eat 30 of ‘em, he’s a man now” said Childers.
Because even the experts know, you can’t eat just one.
