Speak Up: Proposed MATA Changes

(Memphis) Public review and comment will take place this month for MATA service changes that may take place August 25th.

The changes would affect 23 routes, including the addition of one route and the elimination of six others.

Recommendations from the Short Range Transit Plan, which was completed in June 2012, have been incorporated into the proposal.

Comments received by the public will be reviewed and considered by the MATA Board of Commissioners at a special meeting on August 5.

Copies of the proposed changes and maps may be obtained by contacting MATA’s Information Center at 901-274-6282. They may also be viewed at www.matatransit.com and at the North End Terminal, the American Way Transit Center, and the Airways Transit Center.

MATA will host two public meetings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed changes and give customers an opportunity to comment on the proposed modifications:

Each meeting will have an open house format. Open houses are designed for attendees to drop in anytime during the meeting hours. Staff will be available to share information, answer questions and gather public feedback.  A court reporter will be available to record comments from the public.

PROPOSED FIXED-ROUTE BUS SERVICE CHANGES

2 Madison – New Route Name modified Weekday, Saturday and Sunday schedules and route.

4 Walker – Modified Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday schedules

5 Central – The loop at the eastern end of the route will operate so that outbound service on Central will turn right on Zach Curlin, right on Walker and right on Patterson before turning left on Central to go inbound.

6 Northaven – Eliminate route.  No alternate service is available.

7 Air Park – Modified schedule will eliminate the eastbound 2:25p trip and the westbound 3:13p trip.  No additional changes in service. No change in routing.

10 Watkins – Eliminate route. See Route 42 Crosstown for replacement service.

11 Thomas – Modified weekday schedule. Add one 6:00a trip inbound.

12 Florida –.Frequency of Weekday service changes from 60 minutes to 120 minutes.  Saturday frequency remains 120 minutes.

13 Lauderdale – Modified route, Weekday and Saturday and schedules.

15 Presidents Island – Eliminate route.  No alternate service is available.

19 Vollintine – Modified route.  Service on Wells Station, Leroy and Graham is eliminated.

20 Bellevue – Modified Weekday and Saturday route and schedules.  The route will no longer service downtown.

31 Crosstown – Eliminate route. See Route 42 Crosstown and Route 57 Park for replacement service.

35 South Parkway – Modified weekday route.

36 Hacks Cross – Modified weekday and Saturday route

39 South Third – Modified weekday and Saturday route and schedules.  Combine the Western Park and Ford routes into a single route. Eliminate the Meadowbrook and Ivan loops on the 39 Hodge branch.

42 Crosstown – *NEW ROUTE* to operate between Smith Ridge and Suncrest to Airway and Holmes. Service will operate seven days a week.  Average weekday frequencies will be 15 minutes during peak (6:00a-9:00a and 3:00p-6:00p) and 30 minutes during non-peak; Saturday frequency will be 25 minutes; and Sunday frequency will be 75 minutes

43 Elvis Presley – Eliminate route.  See Route 42 Crosstown for replacement service.

53 Summer – Modified Weekday, Saturday and Sunday routing and schedule.

57 Park – Modified Weekday, Saturday and Sunday routing and schedule. Frequencies on Weekdays: 20-23 minutes during peak; 20-60 minutes during non-peak; Saturday: 30-75 minutes; and Sunday: 60 minutes.

58 Fox Meadows Express – Eliminate route.  See nearby Routes 36 and 57 for alternate service.

69 Winchester – Modified Saturday schedule.  Frequencies change from 60-minute headways to 120-minute headways Saturday only.

82 Germantown – Eliminate the northbound 9:23a trip and the southbound 5:55p trip.

PROPOSED TROLLEY SERVICE CHANGES

Main Street Line – New Service Hours – Monday-Wednesday: Service begins at 9:00a and ends at 10:30p; Thursday-Saturday: Service begins at 9:00a and ends at 11:30p; Sunday: Service begins at 10:00a and ends at 6:00p.  Service will no longer be provided before 9:00a Monday – Friday; after 10:30p Monday – Wednesday; and after 11:30p Thursday – Saturday.

Riverfront Line – New Service Hours – Monday – Wednesday: Service begins at 9:00a and ends at 9:00p; Thursday – Saturday; Service begins at 9:00a and ends at 11:30p; Sunday: Service begins at 10:00a and ends at 6:00p.  Service will no longer be provided after 9:00p Monday – Wednesday and after 11:30p Thursday –Saturday.

Madison Avenue Line – New Service Hours – Monday-Saturday: Service begins at 9:00a and ends at 6:30p.   Service will be eliminated on Sunday; however, alternate nearby Sunday bus service is available on Routes 2 Madison and 56 Lamar.  Service will no longer be provided before 9:00a Monday – Saturday and after 6:30p Monday – Saturday.

Additional trolley service may be added for special events.

PROPOSED MATAPLUS SERVICE CHANGES

The MATAplus service area is defined as the area within ¾ mile of all fixed routes during the days and times that the fixed route operates.  Due to changes in fixed route service there will be changes to MATAplus service.

The elimination of Route 6 Northaven and Route 15 President’s Island will result in certain areas being outside ¾ mile of a fixed route within the service area.

The areas where MATAplus service will no longer be available are:

- Northaven community and N. Watkins St. between Thomas St. (within ¾ mile of Route 6 Northaven); and
– President’s Island (within ¾ mile of Route 15 President’s Island).
