Surgeon General Regina Benjamin to Step Down

(CNN) U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin is stepping down next month after four years on the job.

She announced her decision in an e-mail to staff members Wednesday night. She thanked them for supporting her vision.

Deputy Surgeon General Boris Lushniak will serve as interim surgeon general until a permanent replacement is nominated by President Barack Obama.
