(Memphis) A 24-year-old man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after police say he beat his girlfriend for hours and threatened to set her on fire.

Antonio Davis was arrested several days after the attack last week at the Bella Vista apartments in Hickory Hill.

Police say Davis thought his girlfriend was cheating on him and beat her for several hours with a belt, cable box and a gun.

The woman told police at one point he tied her up, put her in a closet, doused her with lighter fluid and threatened to set her on fire.

Her shoulder was burned by the chemical.

Neighbors saw what was going on, but were too afraid to call police.

"He kept saying all kind of stuff like, you know, I'm going to burn you, I'm going to set you on fire, I'm going to throw you over the balcony. Don't test me. You know I'll do it," said the neighbor.

The victim says the beating lasted about seven hours.

Davis is being held on $500,000 bond.
