(Memphis) A 26-year-old Memphis man is behind bars after police report he beat his girlfriend’s 3 year-old.

Police report the girl needed surgery because of a liver laceration, kidney laceration, ruptured bladder and a 8mm shift in her brain.

“I can't imagine that, you have my heart beating fast thinking about it. My kids I don't play anything like that,” said neighbor Freddie Rudd.

Tony Mckinney is facing charges of aggravated child abuse. He has a $250,000 bond.

According to court documents, McKinney was babysitting his live in girlfriend’s daughter Wednesday, when he spanked the girl and she “became unresponsive.”

The affidavit goes on to say that McKinney put the girl in the back of his car and drove her to meet the baby’s mother.

The mother saw the child was unresponsive and demanded McKinney take them to the hospital.

Police said McKinney took the girl and her mother to Delta Medical and then left.

The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s hospital.

McKinney was later arrested at the apartment were the spanking happened in the 2700 block of Sonora Drive.

“They can be nerve-racking sometimes but it's not that serious to take your anger out on a child,” said neighbor Erica Rudd.

Neighbors reported that police were at the couple’s apartment for hours investigating over the past two days. Most neighbors report seeing McKinney with the child often.

“When I see him he has the baby on his shoulder he got the puppy right there. He had to be angry about something else to hurt that baby like that,” said a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified.

The girl remains in critical condition at Le Bonheur.

McKinney is due in court next month.
