The Memphis Dermatologic Society is sponsoring a Memphis Citywide Skin Cancer Screening in six locations across the metropolitan area, Saturday morning May 4th 2013, as listed below.
The event is free and open to the public, and it is being sponsored by volunteer dermatologists.
The most serious type of skin cancer is melanoma, a condition which will be diagnosed in about 175 people this year in Memphis. We lose about 25 people to melanoma in this metropolitan area each year, but fortunately early detection saves lives.
The locations for the screening are as follows:
- Germantown Athletic Club: 1801 Exeter Road, Germantown TN
- DAC Fitness-Laurelwood: 426 S. Grove Park. Memphis, TN 767-8437.
- St. Francis Hospital Physical Therapy, 5959 Park Avenue. Memphis TN 765-2230.
- Collierville Public Library, Collierville TN. 501 Poplar View Parkway, Collierville TN 457-2600.
- Bert Ferguson Community Center, 8505 Trinity Rd CordovaTN 38018
- Fogelman YMCA, 245 Madison Avenue, in downtown Memphis, TN
This event is in coordination with the American Academy of Dermatology, which has sponsored this program for the last 26 years, thereby screening over 2 million Americans.
Melanoma is a significant public health issue since it takes one American life every hour, i.e. 9500 lives this calendar year. And it should be detectable by visual inspection. The major risk factor is ultraviolet radiation from the sun and from tanning beds.
No appointment is needed and the screening is “first come, first served,” for all locations except St. Francis Physical Therapy, where appointments need to be scheduled at 1-901-765-1849. The event runs from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at all locations except Collierville Public Library (10:00 AM to noon).
If there is interest in running an interview with a patient on the news – perhaps Friday 05/03/2013 – I would be happy to let a team come to my office in Cordova – at 8143 Walnut Grove Road – at which point we could arrange for an interview with a patient if you like.
I will be seeing patients there Friday 05/03/2013 from 7:45 AM to 4:00 Pm.
Your station’s interest in and support of this event has been integral to its success in prior years.
