Helena-West Helena, AR Radio Station Owner Shot During Robbery Attempt

(Helena-West Helena, AR) The owner of a popular christian radio station is shot during an attempted armed robbery.

Elijah Mondy is in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was shot early Monday morning in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas after he and his wife stopped to help someone they thought was injured.

Mondy is usually behind the microphone at his FM station.

But Tuesday, his daughter Zipporah took his place at the control board while her father recovers from the gunshot wound.

Zipporah says ever since the shooting, listeners have flooded the station with phones calls, "It's frustration, shock, anger and then support: loving, caring, support. All kinds of encouraging words from people."

Elijah was a passenger in the car driven by his wife Melinda.

They were returning from the store, when they stopped to help a man lying on the street.

Helena-West Helena Police Captain Carl Vann says that's when an act of kindness turned violent, "When they pulled up to help him, he tried to get into their car. As he was trying to get into the car, others ran out from the darkness."

Captain Vann says Melinda Mondy sensed trouble and tried to drive away, "At some point she heard a gunshot. Mr. Mondy said, 'I've been shot."

Mrs. Mondy wasn't hurt.

There's an active search going on right now for suspects who shot a well-respected member of the community,

As for Elijah Mondy, we're told he was speaking with friends and family yesterday and is in serious but stable condition.
