(Memphis) It’s the latest move to compete for your dollars in the battle of the shipping delivery giants.
Memphis based FedEx has launched a new flexible service called FedEx Delivery Manager.
It allows customers to choose from a range of options to schedule dates, locations and times of delivery.
Richard Magid says it’s a service he might consider using, “It might be useful for something. I would not want it sitting on the porch at home. For a book or DVD I wouldn’t worry about it, but maybe if I knew I had something a little more valuable, it would be useful.”
The increase in online shopping played a role in swaying FedEx to let customers schedule a two-hour delivery window, but it comes with a price.
The fee is ten dollars per delivery.
For five dollars, you can reschedule the delivery day or location with detailed instructions for the driver.
But Odell Wintersteen says she’s not sold on paying for the extra cost, just yet, “I don’t need to get it right there, right now. So, I’m always watching my money.”
Rival UPS first offered its “UPS My Choice” service more than a year ago to help enhance first-time delivery with customers getting alerts and details on the specific time frame for a shipment.
Still, FedEx customers such as Danny Moore say they welcome the Memphis company’s new options, “FedEx is for people who need something specific. They have a specific target they’re trying to reach. I need to get this package to so-and-so before we lose money. So, I’ll pay extra to get the job done because it’ll make me more money in the long run.”
FedEx also points out some other services are still free, including putting a 14 day vacation hold on deliveries or making a delivery requests such as “please leave package at back door.”
