MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men’s tennis team (14-7) won its first Conference USA Championship with a 4-2 victory over No. 23 Tulsa (15-7), Sunday. The win gives the Tigers their first-ever C-USA crown and the league’s automatic bid in to the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Men’s Tennis Selection Show will air on Tuesday, April 30th at 5:00 p.m. The win is also Memphis’ first-ever win over Tulsa in 12 tries. Tulsa came into the 2013 C-USA Championships having won six of the last seven C-USA crowns.

Memphis got off to an aggressive start in doubles, picking up 8-4 wins at No. 1 and 2 to jump up 1-0 after the doubles point.

Tulsa answered back with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles from No. 48 ranked Clifford Marsland to make it 1-1.

David O’Hare then made it 2-1 Memphis with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, his second straight win in the C-USA Championships after he was up, but missed a chance to close out the win, in the first match against UAB.

Freshman Lukas Vrnak then pushed the Tigers to a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, but again Tulsa answered, this time with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles from Carlos Bautista.

But junior Johnny Grimal, whose win at No. 4 helped clinch Memphis’ semifinal win over Rice, had the game-winner again, battling back from 3-2 down in the third set after dropping his second set to win the third set in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory that gave Memphis its first C-USA championship in school history.

The victory is the third of the season for Memphis over a top 25 opponent. The Tigers also own earlier season wins over Cornell (then No. 23) and VCU (then No. 24), both on the road.
