(Memphis) A Memphis Police officer has been charged with filing a false report.

According to investigators, on March 23, 2013, “Officer Brian Phillips filed an Identity Theft report alleging that unknown suspects opened five separate accounts using his identity. Phillips filled out, signed and swore to an affidavit of fraud at a credit union in Millington, Tennessee, advising that over $20,000 in debt incurred was fraudulent.”

Memphis Police Economic Crimes investigators found the accounts were, “valid debts made by Phillips. By filing the Identity Theft report, Phillips knowingly filed a police report to a law enforcement officer knowing the offense did not occur.”

Phillips turned himself in to authorities and is currently out of jail on a $5,000 bond.

Phillips has been employed with the Memphis Police Department since February 2007 and is currently assigned to Mount Moriah Station.
