(Memphis) A gas station clerk has been charged with aggravated assault for shooting a man he said was trying to rob him.

It happened late Sunday night at the Citgo in the 2900 block of Old Austin Peay.

It's the same store where a man was shot on Valentine's Day after getting into a fight with another customer outside the store.

Police said when they got to the store last night they found a man outside bleeding from the stomach area.

Johnnie Jordan told them the clerk shot him after he asked him for some money.

Police said the clerk, Mohamad Adam Algahim, told them Jordan reached over the counter to rob the store and then ran to the back of the business and that is when he shot him in the back.

Customers said they could understand why the clerk might be nervous, but he had no right to shoot someone running the other way.

"I do thing it was wrong. I do think it was wrong. There are cameras everywhere. Maybe we can find out what happened," said Carmen Yelvington.

Police did look at surveillance video and that's when they arrested and charged Algahim with assault.

Algahim does not have any prior arrests.

He will make his first court appearance Tuesday.

Jordan is listed in good condition at The MED.
