Man Charged With Murder of Marco McMillian
(Coahoma County, MS) Lawrence Reed, 22, of Shelby, Mississippi has been charged with the murder of Clarksdale Mayoral Candidate Marco McMillien.
The body of McMillien was found Wednesday in the Mississippi River bottoms just west of Clarksdale.
“As of this morning, the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office located a body here in Coahoma County. That body has been identified as Marco McMillien,” said Coahoma Sheriff’s Spokesman Will Rooker.
Marco McMillien had been missing since his car was involved in an accident along highway 49 at the Coahoma-Tallahachie County line Tuesday morning.
McMillien’s wrecked car may hold some of the only clues into what looks by all appearances to be a murder investigation.
Reed was reportedly driving the car and told investigators McMillien, a candidate for Clarksdale Mayor was dead, and his body could be found in the isolated area behind the Mississippi River levee.
Reed remains in The Med in Memphis recovering from injuries sustained in the accident.
The discovery of the body so far from town has raised lots of eyebrows in Coahoma County, because no one can think of a reason Marco McMillien would be out there.
People living in the nearby community of Sherard can’t believe the gruesome find.
They’re nervous about their safety.
”It’s got to be something about it, because don’t hardly anybody know where Sherard is, it’s a little town so you don’t expect to hear that” said Lashell Drake.
While investigators remain extremely tight-lipped about their investigation, they did offer one piece of comforting news about McMillian’s death.
“At this time the Sheriff’s Office does have a person of interest in custody in relation to the case. Due to the fact that it is an ongoing investigation, any information in regard to the individual’s name will be released at a later date.”
