(Cordova, TN) Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies have detained a man who admitted to shooting his wife early Thursday morning.

According to SCSO spokesperson Chip Washington, the man told investigators he accidentally shot his wife while cleaning his gun.

Deputies responded to the shooting around 4:30 Tuesday morning in the 1000 block of East Links View Drive in Cordova.

Washington said the 59 year-old woman was taken to The MED where she is expected to recover. Investigators are calling the shooting suspicious.

“I can understand people wanting to have guns for protection, but also that accidents happen and people they make mistakes,” said neighbor Rudy Sladyk who awoke to the commotion Tuesday morning.

Neighbors are on edge after another neighbor, just a few blocks away, was discovered murdered in his home on Friday.

Investigators found 49-year-old Jimmy McClain at his home in the 7600 block of Cordova Club Drive.

They are still searching for suspects and information in that case.

Meantime, neighbors hope the suspect’s version of events is true.

“I’m scared and now I’m a marine from World War II,” said Charlie Henry.
