Tennessee Amazon Customers To Be Billed Sales Tax

(Memphis) Celeste Powers doesn’t shop a lot on Amazon.com, so she was surprised when she got an email from them last night, “I got an email from amazon saying I purchased a hundred and twenty-seven dollars’ worth of items from amazon, and I could be billed for or liable for in taxes.”

Anna Howell’s a CPA who specializes in sales tax and says Tennessee residents are getting these bills because they’re part of a tax agreement between the state and Amazon to put a distribution center in the eastern part of the state.

“There’s lots of things out there and lots of advice, but you do owe the tax. Iit is due, so you should log onto the website and pay that tax,” said Howell.

Just click the link at the bottom of the email you get from Amazon.

It will take you to the Tennessee Department of Revenues website where you will have to fill out a form and file the taxes you owe.

Starting in 2014 Amazon will start to charge Tennessee residents sales tax when they checkout so you don’t have to go back at the end of the year and pay what you owe.

Harry Mongue got the email and says it’s more of an inconvenience than anything else, but he knows people who are going to owe a lot of money, “I’ll probably pay it. Because it’s not something I want to come up and bite me later.”

Monday April 15th is the last day to file your taxes.
