(Memphis) -  Bible study was interrupted Wednesday night at the Mt. Bethel Church on Deadrick Street when a man walked in and said he had been shot.

Police say the man was in his car behind the church, when two men armed with a gun approached him.

Police say they tried to rob him, but the man refused. They then shot him in the leg. The suspects took off on foot, while the victim drove himself to the front of the church to get some help.

Luckily, the church was holding bible study so there were people inside.

We spoke with one church member who didn’t want to be identified who told us he’s just happy his church was open.

“It’s a blessing that the church was open because he needed assistance and we was glad to be here to provide assistance for the young man and also able to call his mother. In times like these we just all need to continue to pray. We just all need to come together as a community because we all need each other.”

The man was taken to the hospital where he listed in non-critical condition. The suspects remain on the loose.
