(Aurora, CO) SWAT teams with the Aurora Police Department shot and killed a suspect Saturday morning after a standoff lasting several hours. Three other people were found dead inside the townhome.
The identities of the suspect and the deceased have not been released, nor have police confirmed the relationship between the gunman and those found dead, CBS Station KCNC reports.
The suspect had been barricaded inside the house since 3 a.m., after neighbors called police and said they had heard gunshots coming from inside.
SWAT teams converged outside the home on E. Ithaca Place and tried to contact the person inside, but were unable to get the man to leave the residence. Several neighboring townhomes were evacuated.
Police said one woman did escape from inside the townhome. It is not clear if she suffered any injuries or if she escaped before police arrived.
KCNC reports police fired what may have been tear gas inside the home about 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, and that the suspect shot at their armored vehicles. SWAT officers fired back.
The suspect was shot and killed. When officers entered the home, they found three other people dead. Authorities said the three victims inside appeared to have been killed before officers arrived.
Aurora was the scene of a mass shooting at a movie theatre last July, when a gunman entered a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” and opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding 50 others. A court hearing on the suspect in that shooting, James Holmes, will be held on Monday.
