Jacksonville, FL-Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell picked the wrong day to play poorly. Taking on 20th ranked Northwestern in the New Year’s Day Gator Bowl, Russell threw four interceptions to doom Mississippi State in a 34-20 loss.
Northwestern got on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game when Quentin Williams picked off the first of Russell’s four interceptions and returned it 29 yards for a 7-0 lead.
Russell would throw a couple of touchdown passes to his own teammates, but killed a rally by throwing a fourth quarter pick that Northwestern turned into a clinching score. Mississippi State lost five of its last six games, all by double digits, to finish 8-5. State had opened the season 7-0.
