(Memphis) Parents and teachers get to weigh in today on the controversial idea to close Memphis City Schools.

The Shelby County School Board proposes closing Humes Middle School but then re-opening it as a performing arts school.

Humes is the only middle school of six Memphis City Schools up for closure. The other five are elementary schools.

The transition planning commission supported closing under-used schools as a way to meet a projected budget deficit.

For Humes, it could become an optional school.

No final decision has been made yet regarding the future of Humes or any other school.

Tonight’s meeting will take place at the school on Manassas starting at 5:30 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.
