(Memphis) A man trying to rescue a woman from her burning home has died.

Firefighters were called to the house fire in the 4800 block of Walden Glen around 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

While fighting the fire, they saw a man retreat from the  front of the home then collapse. The 69-year-old neighbor was taken to Methodist North where he eventually died.

His identity has not been released at this time.

While noting the heroic efforts of the neighbor, firefighters want to remind citizens of the severe dangers of going into a burning building.

“If you are safely out of the house… STAY OUT!” says Fire Chief Clarence L. Cash, Jr. “Your chances of becoming a victim yourself greatly increase once you commit to entering a home that is ablaze – especially if you do not have the proper training and equipment.”
