(Memphis) – It was a busy day for Memphis police. There were five different shootings that left three people dead and two others in the hospital tonight.
The shootings started just after midnight and continued well into this Veterans Day.
From Nutbush to South Memphis, from Whitehaven to Hickory Hill, violence stretched all across Memphis Sunday and it doesn't appear that any of the shootings are related.
The first shooting happened just after midnight in the Nutbush Community off Jackson Avenue.
Marco Lira was grieving the death of his 21-year-old son, Louis. He was shot multiple times on Davis Circle when he went to confront somebody over money they owed him.
Lira called 911 when his son showed up to his house with a gunshot wound. He died sitting in the driver’s seat of his own car.
Neighbor Dustin Williams heard the gunshots, “Just loud pops, just one after the other. It's seems like someone was intentionally trying to hit their target.”
A second person was found shot to death in Whitehaven. Police are only calling this a death investigation. They're trying to determine if the man was murdered.
However, police are confident the man on Selkirk was killed. He was found in his driveway with an apparent gunshot wound. This brought the total number of violent deaths on Veterans Day to three.
“Third? It's dangerous out here,” said Antonio Smith. “I'm staying in the house.”
Two other people were shot on Sunday evening, one of them a 16-year-old. He was taken to Le Bonheur where his conditioned worsened.
People in Memphis wonder what's going on around town.
“It's just senseless, there is no need for this kind of violence,” said Williams. “There is no need for this kind of thing to go on.”
The two homicide investigations bring the total number of murders this year to 128. That's 30 more than last year and we still have less than two months to go.
