(Memphis) The construction project on Interstate 55 at Mallory is finally wrapping up.

Both sides of the highway will be fully open — for the first time in nearly four years. TDOT says it will open both sides of the highway around 10 a.m. after rush hour.

Crews still have to install the median. The center lanes on each side will still be closed but are expected to be completed by Christmas.

This project was originally set to be completed two years ago. We wanted to know what took so long.

“It’s a very complex project,” said TDOT representative Steve Chipman. “Working to maintain safety throughout the project caused it to take a little longer. But it’s because we were working with the regulations that Valero and that the railroad has to abide by.”

TDOT hopes the improvements will make the interstate safer for drivers, especially with the truck traffic that comes through headed to Valero and the industrial park.
