(Memphis) Musicians across the world are mourning the loss of B.B. Cunningham, a musician who played with Jerry Lee Lewis.
Over the weekend, he came to the aid of a woman when suspected gang members started shooting at her for no apparent reason.
“B.B. was standing here when they shot at me,” said Theresa Sanders.
Before Cunningham was shot and killed, Security Guard Sanders says the first bullet was shot at her.
“He saw them shoot at me and so when they ran across the street that is when he was trying to help me out,” said Sanders. “I ran across the street to try and help him out.”
Sanders says the next time she saw Cunningham, he was dead, “That bullet hit him in the chest.”
Police say 16-year-old Henry White was also found shot and killed.
We found a picture of him on Facebook throwing up gang signs.
Sanders says black and Hispanic gangs are at odds in the East Memphis neighborhood, which all came to a head early Sunday morning.
Sanders says the gangs were fighting throughout the night in a parking lot over music.
“You know, ‘we don`t want to listen to the black music’ and the blacks would say “We don`t` want to listen to the Hispanic music’,” she said.
That’s when she says one of the men, Dock Britt, aimed his gun at her and fired. Sanders says she ducked behind a tree.
Britt is now in jail for attempted murder and the murder of Cunningham.
Police are still trying to figure out who killed the 16-year-old boy.
Meanwhile, Sanders says she is struggling with the loss of a fellow security guard, a famous musician, she only knew as someone who had her back.
“I feel sad,” said Sanders. “I feel hurt.”
