(Memphis) Nine-year old Makala Parker is ready to get back to school, after two days in the hospital.
She was attacked by a pit bull Wednesday evening along Pin Oak Road in Marshall County, just south of Byhalia.
"He knocked down the door and he came out and he started biting on my clothes and I fell. He started biting on my ears," said Makala.
The dog belonged to a friend she was planning on playing with that day.
Fortunately, a couple walked by during the attack were able to distract the dog while Makala got away.
"Basically her head has a gash. She has stitches on her ears and she has a lot of puncture wounds from her chest down to her leg," said Makala's mother Jennifer Leann Rickman.
"I don’t understand why it happened to her, but I know everything happens for a reason and she is going to be better," said Rickman.
Makala underwent a five-hour surgery to see how deep the gash was on her head.
After all she has been through she was ready to go back to school Friday and wanted to let all of her friends who sent her letters know she was okay.
"Even her second grade teacher called and offered to driver her home after school. Everybody’s being wonderful with the support," said Rickman.
The dog that mauled Makala was taken by Marshall County Animal Control.
The owners have decided they will put the dog down.
