21-Year-Old Charged with Vehicular Homicide
(Memphis) Sadness and anger in Cordova from neighbors of a man killed at the hands of a drunk driver.
Police say when they got to the crash scene, Billy Penn was already dead.
Police say the driver of the car who hit him had slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and was in a state of confusion.
Police say Jordan Stonebrook told them he was “f”ed up and had drunk seven shots of rum earlier Wednesday night. They say his decision to get behind the wheel after that cost a man his life.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said Cordova Resident Lisa Douba.
“He was a very nice man,” said Neighbor Cordey Crittendon. “He was a retired pharmacist.”
Crittendon says his 74-year old-neighbor Billy Penn, a father of three and devoted Christian, didn’t deserve to die because of another man’s careless decision, “I am really angry and upset that he put himself in that predicament.”
Police say Stonebrook was driving down Cordova Road, on the wrong side of the road.
They say he hit Penn’s car head-on.
“He had died in the accident instantly,” said Crittendon.
The Collierville man accused of drinking and driving just turned 21 -years-old last month.
Now, he’s charged with vehicular homicide.
“He’s got a life ahead of him and he’s got that burden on him for the rest of his days,” said Douba. “He’ll never be able to forget that.”
Stonebrook faces up to 30 years in prison for this crime.
Right now, he is being held on a $100,000 bond.
