(Memphis) When another business was hit by copper thieves earlier this week, Memphis police hoped to catch the thieves.

They got some big help when 47-Year-Old Cedric Brooks showed up at the police department yesterday and confessed to the crime.

Investigators say he told them he damaged several air conditioning units at  W.A. Soefker and Son Mechanical Contractors off Chelsea early Monday morning.

Police say he also he went with them to the business and showed them where he climbed over a razor wire fence.

They say he also told them that was how he cut his face and legs.

Owners of the business say thieves destroyed four industrial size A/C units to steal about $150 worth of copper tubing.

They were thrilled when they heard someone had turned himself in.

“I couldn’t believe it when police told me yesterday on the phone that he turned himself in. I said what, you know,” said Walter Soefker.

Police say Brooks may  have been afraid his accomplices were going to talk and that’s why he confessed.

He has been charged with theft of property and vandalism.
