Fire Kills Family’s Pets and Destroys Home

(Independence,MS) A north Mississippi family is trying to recover after losing everything in a devastating house fire over the weekend.

The fire sparked at a utility pole outside the home, before sweeping through.

Deesha Baldwin said her brother was asleep in his room, when he smelled the smoke coming towards the family, “He started screaming, ‘the house is on fire, get the kids out.”

She didn`t have time to panic.

She woke up her three kids and rushed out of their home on Greenleaf Road.

They watched as shooting flames and thick smoke devoured their house.

“You work so hard and it can be taken away from you,” expressed Baldwin.

But what`s charred and twisted  isn’t the only loss.

The family’s two dogs died in the fire, “They found her in my oldest boy’s bedroom. I don’t think she saw him come out. She went back to see if he got out.”

Now mourning the loss of their pets, Baldwin, and her family are trying to start fresh.

They just moved in, and hadn’t gotten around to getting renters insurance.

Some things, like baby pictures, just can’t be replaced, “Those are memories you will never get back.”

Through the tears, Baldwin said her family is still fortunate, “I thank God that we all got out. It could have been worse.”
