New Tape Released In Jonesboro Shooting
(Jonesboro, AR) In the latest video released by police, you see the ambulance arriving moments after police say they found Chavis Carter dead in the back of their squad car.
On the tape you hear an unnamed officer said, “We were talking, about to get in the back of the car. I thought I heard a strange noise, heard a pop, got in smelled gunpowder, and he was leaned over.”
There was a significant amount of silence and then the officer is heard on tape saying, “Better him than us”.
The video is the latest released in the past 24 hours. Earlier clips show Chavis Carter removed from a pickup, and patted down by an officer. We showed the tape to former West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert. He said it’s hard to tell but doesn’t look like much of a pat down. Paudert says if officers don’t find the subject threatening sometimes they can be lax.
In the video you see and hear Chavis Carter, and police explaining his charges to someone else
An unnamed officer said “We found a big bag, it’s probably sugar but it’s bagged up like cocaine.”
The one thing it still doesn’t show is the time right before Carter’s shooting and that’s what upset his mother. She texted me reporter Wayne Carter last night and said. “Thanks so much. I thought I was going to see what happened to my baby.
