(Memphis) James Jones isn’t good on his legs, but the 83-year-old has a good heart, “I was raised like that. My daddy was always taking in somebody.”

James says in March, he let Jerome Jenkins sleep on his couch when the young man needed a place to stay, “I let him stay a couple of nights.”

Then one night, Jones said Jenkins robbed him, “He caught me by my collar.”

Police say Jenkins twisted the elderly man’s arm, and while James fought back, Jenkins stole $200 out of his pocket.

“I hate that it happened to him and I hate that my nephew did that to him,” said Alex Jenkins who is James’ neighbor and the suspect’s cousin.

Alex says he was sitting on the  porch with some friends when he heard James come out of his house calling for help, “I went over there and got him [Jenkins] away from him and I got the money out of his hand that he had taken from him and gave it back to him.”

“He brought me 100 dollars of my money back,” said Jones.

James says he is grateful Alex stepped in, but that he won’t be doing any more favors for his cousin, who’s now in jail charged with assault and robbery.

“Would you ever let him stay here again?’ asked Reporter Sabrina Hall.

“Oh no,” he said.

Jenkins bond has been set at $150,000.
