Witnesses Use Hammer & Bat To Fight Off Teen Rapist
(Memphis) Some good Samaritans who saw a teenager being assaulted by a man along South Parkway early Tuesday morning were able to rescue the girl from the would-be rapist.
Memphis police say a 17-year-old girl was walking to Montgomery Plaza Apartments when she was attacked by a 25-year-old man.
Witnesses say drivers saw the man on top of the girl, they say he had pulled down her pants and was trying to drag her into some bushes.
One man stopped and hit the man with hammer.
A female driver got out of her vehicle with a bat.
They were able to get the man off the girl, then he took off running.
Another woman who saw what was going on was able to flag down a police officer for help.
“The baby was standing there crying, so I parked my car and ran back down here. They told me what happened and I said ‘where is the dude.’ I was getting ready to get in my car and go chase him and they said someone was already chasing him,” said Marilyn Sanders.
Samuel Pigues was one of the two people who stopped and noticed something wrong Tuesday morning. He said the suspect was on top of the girl on the sidewalk. He said he saw the suspect trying to pull her clothes off.
He said he looked around his car for the heaviest object he could find. He found a hammer, only about a foot in length, and jumped into action.
“I went over there and I first yelled at him,” Pigues said. “And I plucked him with that hammer, and he kept doing what he was doing. And I plucked him again. He jumped up. He must have felt that one.”
Pigues said he does not consider himself a hero. He said he was thinking this girl could have been one of his grandchildren and that he would do it again if needed.
Police arrested the man on the scene, but so far no charges have been filed.
Friends say the teenager is very shaken up, but physically is fine.
