Major John Gwyn of the Memphis Police Department told News Channel 3 a woman was found dead in the stairwell of the 19th floor of the Renaissance Apartments at 99 N. Main St.

She was found with blood near her body.

Suspected blood was found two floors up from her.

Maj. Gwyn said it would take pathology tests to determine exactly how she was wounded.

He said they are investigating this as a suspicious death.

No person of interest was near the woman when she was found, and no one is in custody.

Residents in the apartment complex said they did not sense anything unusual, until they saw emergency vehicles coming up to their complex.

Gail Brooks is a bit unnerved, thinking of previous violence at the complex.

Years ago, a man killed his wife before jumping off the building.

Then, Brooks recalls, “This is the second time. The man living right next door to me committed suicide, what, about a year ago?”

But they still feel safe, because of security in the building. Only residents with cards can swipe through to enter.

“I hope it’s not random,” said Kyle Turner. “I don’t think it is.”

Turner, who just moved into these apartments, said management requires background checks before one moves in.

He and his roommate already met friendly neighbors, and they said they feel comfortable there, as long as they’re alert and keep their doors locked.
