(Southaven, MS) Mayor Greg Davis’ paycheck was garnished by the state to repay more than $70,000 the auditor says the mayor mis-spent.

The mayor and board of aldermen knew nothing about this decision, until state auditor Stacey Pickering made a surprise visit.

Pickering is demanding Davis pay up and told city leaders if they issue Davis a paycheck, they will be liable for the money.

“Whoever authorizes that pay check and cuts it, will be liable to the taxpayers of Southaven and the state of Mississippi.”

Davis fired back saying he would seek a restraining order to keep his paychecks coming, “We’ll be filing that asking for a TRO (temporary restraining order)  for him not to be able to stop the paycheck.”

The auditor gave the city back $96 thousand dollars of taxpayer money he says the mayor mis-spent and his office has collected from Davis.

Mayor Davis said the auditor also owes the taxpayers interest, and he is just grandstanding to get votes

“It’s our turn to tell our story. But now, it’ll be in a court of law where there is fairness and interpretation of the law is not biased,” said Davis.

The mayor says he doesn’t believe he owes any of the money, will keep working, and will fight the auditor in court.
