Memphis Gas Tax Passes Council And Heads To Voters
(Memphis) The Memphis City Council has passed a gas tax that will add one cent to every gallon of gas you buy.
The vote was 9-3, with Commissioners Conrad, Hedgepeth and Strickland voting against it.
Voters will have the final say on whether the tax goes into effect.
The tax was proposed by council member Edmund Ford Jr.
The tax could generate $3 to $6 million a year, which would go to fund mass transit such as Memphis Area Transit Authority.
Voters will get their say November 6, at the same time they vote on whether the Memphis sales tax should go up half a percent.
