Pot Found Growing Behind Seniors Apartment Complex
(Marvell, AR) A small field of marijuana was found growing in a place you might not expect, behind an apartment complex for senior citizens.
The pot was found in the small Arkansas town of Marvell, in Phillips County.
“Wooo, I think it’s terrible.”
That’s was Elizabeth Barfield’s reaction after we told her about a small crop of marijuana growing behind the “Senior Haven” Apartments in Marvell Arkansas.
Fifteen plants were found after an anonymous phone call to Marvell Mayor Donald Culpit, “I’m glad I got the phone call. It was a concerned citizen that called us. We responded.”
The Mayor says the caller told him about some suspicious activity behind the apartments.
The caller said someone connected a garden hose to an outside faucet on one of the living units and was watering marijuana growing in the woods.
The Mayor and one of Marvell’s Police Officers went to investigate, “As we kind of approached the woods there was a pile of water hoses.”
The Mayor says after following the water hose “trail” for about 70-yards, they found what they were looking for, “Quite honestly both my officer and myself could identify it by both sight and the smell. You could smell the marijuana plants. There were some of the plants that probably were five feet tall. They were young plants.”
Some of the senior citizens at the apartments say they’ve seen someone taking water from the unit before, but thought it was for watering tomato plants.
The apartment manager only had two words for us, “No Comment.”
The Mayor said he doesn’t know if anyone at the apartments was involved, but plans to stop any drug activity in Marvell, “If you’re going to buy them, if you’re going to sell them and in this case if you’re going to grow them, go find another playground.”
We have not been able to confirm that a suspect is in custody in connection with the seized pot crop.
Investigators with the Phillips County Sheriff’s Department have not returned our calls.
