28 Year Old Battles Mystery Illness
Shanyna Isom never thought at 28 years old she would be walking with a walker, wearing a wig and have scabs all over her body. Just 2 years ago she was a vibrant University of Memphis student, until she had an asthma attack.
She was treated with steroids that she had an allergic reaction to. And ever since her entire body has changed.
“My skin wasn’t getting enough oxygen, it started to scab up,” explained Isom. She’s weak, lost 160 pounds and all of her hair.
Nearly two years later no one knows what is wrong with her. She’s seen doctors all over Memphis, Nashville and even been to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
“I always ask my favorite question ‘have you ever seen this before?’ I could tell by the way they look when they come in the room, doctors are not supposed to look so surprised,” said Isom who said she has seen over 100 doctors in the past two years.
But she has found some relief at John Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. They are studying her illness and are treating her during her once a month trips to the hospital.
But the trips are very expensive. She had mounting healthcare cost and her mother lost her job while taking care of her.
“With me not having any healthcare, I was spending $500 to $1,100 for different prescriptions,” said Isom.
Neighbors and friends have held several fundraisers in the past two years and she is living with her uncle but she still has a long path ahead of her. And she has no idea when her journey will end.
“I had rice like stems growing out of body…everywhere hair grows, I had nails growing on,” explains Isom.
