Sheriff’s Office: Check On Your Neighbors
(Memphis ) If you want to know what makes Miss Motley’s day, it’s a visit from volunteer, and now friend, Bobbie Studard.
“We’ve been coming out and visiting her for 9 years now,” said Studard.
He’s a volunteer for the Senior Services Unit with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, “Anyone that`s a senior can sign up for us to come visit them.”
Twenty-five volunteers put on their uniforms and drive to homes, making sure the elderly are holding up in the heat. Bobbie visits about 30 people a day, ensuring they have a working AC unit or some fans in the house at the very least.
And Bobbie says he reminds the elderly to stay indoors when the temperatures are above 100 degrees.
“She wants to get out in the yard and work but we fuss at her and we tell her don`t do it,” said Studard.
He says it feels good making a difference, “Some of these people have outlived all of their relatives and we are the only people who check on them every week.”
“Someone cares about a 80-year-old person,” said Cyra Motley, who is turning 89 next month.
And Bobbie says whether you have a Senior Services uniform on or not, everybody can do their part.
If you want to volunteer with the Senior Services unit, or would like to get a visit from them, call 901-222 -5922.
Otherwise, the Sheriff’s Office is encouraging everyone to check on their elderly neighbors, making sure they are drinking enough water and generally doing o.k. in this heat.
