First Lady Michelle Obama Makes Fundraising Stop In Memphis
(Memphis) Several people lined up outside the Memphis Cook Convention Center holding signs to get a glimpse of First Lady Michelle Obama.
She visited Memphis today to host a campaign fundraiser.
This is Mrs. Obama’s first visit to Memphis in four years.
While people waited outside just to get a glimpse of her, others paid big bucks to hear her speak and get a picture taken with her.
“I wanted to go to the luncheon but i found out to late,” said Memphian Asenath Simpson.
She didn’t let that, or the sweltering heat keep her from at least hoping for a glimpse of first lady Michelle Obama.
Simpson joined a handful of supporters outside the Cook Convention Center Thursday celebrating the Supreme Court’s vote upholding the President’s Health Care Plan.
As many as 300 people attended Thursday’s fundraiser and a chance to see the first lady up close.
Kimberley Dandridge, Student Body President at Ole Miss, says the first lady’s appearance is a plus for Memphis, “Especially in a state that’s mostly conservative. for them to say, ‘ok we’re going to give Memphis a shot and come here’, and see if they can pull supporters I think is a great move. So I’m excited about being here today to see the first lady.”
Not everyone was excited about about the first lady’s visit.
Members of Occupy Memphis took the opportunity to express their point of view, “We’re fighting for our right to peaceably assemble and our freedom of speech.”
No news cameras were allowed inside the luncheon but Kimberley Dandridge did get some video of the first lady on her camera.
She says Michelle Obama talked about a variety of issues, from employment to the economy to foreign policy.
She also said the Supreme Court’s decision “Was truly a victory for families all across the country.”
Memphian Miracle Williams says being at the fundraiser with Michelle Obama was inspiring, “It was very powerful. The emotion just came off of her and into the public. And you could just feel everything that she was talking about.”
Memphis wasn’t the only stop on the first lady’s Tennessee tour.
Earlier today Mrs. Obama was in Nashville for another fundraising event.
