Police: Frayser Man Shot To Death By Woman’s Ex-Boyfriend
(Memphis) – 30-year-old Matthew Kimpel was shot to death outside of a home on Whitney Avenue early Sunday morning.
“He’s my best friend and he died right in front of my eyes,” said Robert Maness.
He says the ex-boyfriend of a woman living there showed up at the house with his friends demanding answers.
“He thought something was going on [between Kimpel and the woman],” said Maness.
After a brief argument, Maness says the shooter pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Kimpel was shot twice in the stomach. Maness says he put Kimpel in a car and drove him to a fire station just down the road. Paramedics revived Kimpel twice while en route to the Med. He died a few hours later.
The father of two now leaves behind a 12-year-old boy and nine-month-old girl.
“We’re in shock and we can’t believe that this has happened,” said Matthew’s father, Harold Kimpel, “but it has and no matter what happens now our son is not coming back.”
Harold says his son will not die in vain. He will use his Matthew’s death to push for, what he calls, sensible gun control.
“If there is anything he died for, I believe, it should be to take these guns off our streets and stop this killing, stop this robbing, stop this murder,” said Kimpel.
