Home Health Workers say they are Not getting Paid
(Memphis) Tara Moore has the work badge and says she’s put in the hours, but when it comes to getting a paycheck, she says she has yet to see one since she started her new job.
“One month, and I have not got paid,” she said. “A whole month.”
Moore works for the Family Home Health Agency and is one of several workers who’ve called WREG telling us the company is late with paying their employees.
“I just want my check,” said Tameka, another employee who didn’t want to be identified.
They say it’s not just this month that it’s happened, but a half-dozen times in the past.
Monday, some of the workers went to the business looking for answers.
“They can`t tell us nothing,” said Tameka.
“It don`t make any sense at all,” said Tara. “I mean they need to tell us a little more than what they are telling us.”
So we made a trip to the agency ourselves.
“You are not allowed to come in,” said the security guard.
“We are not allowed to come in? Why is that?” asked Reporter Sabrina Hall.
“You are not allowed to come in!” repeated the security guard.
The security guard told us to get off the property and when we called the Family Home Health Agency, they told us no manager was on staff to answer our questions.
Our phone calls were never returned.
Meanwhile, employees say they are having trouble just getting by.
“And everybody wants their check,” said Tara. “We don`t work for free! We work for bills, kids. You know, I have responsibilities.”
“I work for that money,” said Tameka. “ I am there on time. They send you to different houses, so you are burning your gas and that`s just a toll on you. It’s already a struggle in life.”
And Moore says after working a month without getting paid, she doesn’t even have a dime in her pocket, “I don`t have anything.”
The Department of Labor says it’s against federal law for an employer not to pay its workers on the scheduled pay dates and that it will investigate this situation.
